TIM BARNES is an internationally-known percussionist, electronic musician, and recording producer/engineer who has played and recorded with Sonic Youth, Wilco, Body/Head, Jim O’Rourke, Silver Jews, Neil Michael Hagerty and the Howling Hex, The Tower Recordings, The For Carnation, and MV+EE, as well as being featured in countless multiple other settings, from jazz-influenced free-improvisation to full-on rock n’ roll. He is the Artistic Director of Dreamland , and also runs the newly-revived Quakebasket record label (best known for its mid-1990s archival releases of solo work by Angus MacLise, poet and original drummer for the Velvet Underground). A California native, Tim moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 2007 from his longtime musical base, New York City.
JEPH JERMAN. “I have had no formal musical instruction, save two years of drum lessons at around age 13. At 16 I began playing drums and percussion in what would become a long line of dance bands, while at the same time forming and participating in ensembles whose music was decidedly less commercial. The best known of these ensembles are probably Big Joey, formed in 1986, which played entirely improvised songs, and Blowhole, formed in 1991, whose modus operandi included strict improvising as well as more formally structured musical pieces and games. I began investigating sound in a more expansive way on my own, recording and releasing work under the name Hands To on my own and others’ record labels. In 1996 I ended up in Seattle Washington, where I fell in with the local improvised music community. It was here that I believe I really learned how to play, and more importantly, to listen. Becoming less and less interested in conventional drumming, I began to find ways to lessen my control over what I was playing. I began finding sound that “just happened” of much more interest to me than sounds that were meant to be expressive. I became enamored of very quiet sounds and began giving solo performances using only objects found in nature. I have continued this practice to the present. In 1999 I formed the animist orchestra, an ensemble of shifting membership founded for the purpose of making sound with only natural objects.”

Manchester-born ensemble, Distractfold, specialise in performing instrumental, electro-acoustic and mixed chamber music of the 21st century.
In 2014 Distractfold became the first ever UK ensemble to be awarded the Kranichstein Prize for Interpretation at the 47th International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt. In 2016 they returned to Darmstadt presenting two programmes of music at the Centralstation and curated a CD featuring remixes and reworking based on the festival’s 70-year archives.
Currently they are busy curating and producing the 2017 Cut and Splice Festival, which is taking place in Manchester for the first time since the festival’s inception.
For this concert Distractfold will perform as an acoustic duo, with pieces for clarinet and cello by Liza Lim, Olga Neuwirth, and Iannis Xenakis.

THE SET ENSEMBLE
The Set Ensemble is a UK-based collective dedicated to the performance of experimental music and contemporary composition. The exact composition of the group shifts from performance to performance, but all the members of the ensemble are also composers and they often write for one another, using the group as a testing ground for new ideas and approaches. This process is a collaborative endeavour with the score acting as one material amongst many, directing or shaping actions within a complex field of activity.
Their debut CD, Stopcock, was released recently on the Consumer Waste label, and their work is also featured extensively on the Wandelweiser und so weiter box set on Another Timbre.
For this concert The Set Ensemble will be joined by Áine O’Dwyer and will perform three compositions, written for the occasion, by Ryoko Akama, Sarah Hughes, and Lo Wie, commissioned to explore Leonora Carrington’s work during her centenary.
